A new study from The University of Manchester in the UK has revealed that the incidence of dermatitis has increased 4.5 times in healthcare workers following increased hand hygiene as a drive to reduce infections such as MRSA has taken hold. Researchers from the University's Institute of Population Health studied reports voluntarily submitted by dermatologists to a national database which is run by the University (THOR), between 1996 and 2012. Sixty per cent of eligible UK dermatologists used this database which is designed to report skin problems caused or aggravated by work.

Most norovirus outbreaks from contaminated food occur in food service settings, according to a Vital Signs report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Infected food workers are frequently the source of these outbreaks, often by touching ready-to-eat foods served in restaurants with their bare hands. The Canadian Sanitation Supply Association (CSSA) reports that the food service industry can help prevent norovirus outbreaks by enforcing food safety practices, such as making sure workers always practice good hand hygiene on the job and stay home when they are sick.

Cleaners in Egypt have caused untold damage to the burial mask of Pharaoh Tutankhamun after knocking off the blue and gold braided beard, then gluing it back on again.

The pharaoh's 3,300-year-old mask has been left permanently damaged after the relic was hastily stuck together using epoxy glue at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

Good hand washing is the first line of defence against the spread of many illnesses — from the common cold to more serious infections. When kids come into contact with germs, they can unknowingly become infected simply by touching their eyes, nose or mouth. And once they're infected, it's usually just a matter of time before the whole family comes down with the same illness. GOJO has created lesson plans for schools on how to teach our kids proper hand hygiene and it’s importance.

In any commercial setting—whether it is a hotel, office, school, airplane or even a hospital—public restrooms represent one of the biggest infection prevention challenges and are areas with the greatest potential for germ cross-contamination. Due to their function and constant use, everything from urine and fecal matter to other bodily fluids and dirt contribute to restroom cleaning challenges daily. Not to mention, every time a toilet is flushed, it releases a plume of aerosolized droplets that can carry bacteria to other restroom surfaces like floors, walls, and handles, heightening cross-contamination concerns.

What are microfibre cleaning tools?

Microfiber cloth is a velvety, lint-free synthetic material that is very effective for cleaning. Microfiber products are available in different configurations including cloths, mops, and dusters. They can be used dry for dusting or soaked in a cleaning solution for washing surfaces. Microfiber mops consist of a lightweight handle with a very maneuverable flat rectangular head. A microfiber pad attaches to the mop head with velcro. In a typical mopping application, fresh microfiber pads are placed to soak in a basin of cleaning solution. In each room, a clean cloth is taken from the basin, hand wrung out, dropped flat on the floor and the mop head is placed on it. The velcro attaches the cloth to the mop, which is then ready for use. In a typical setting, the worker uses 1-2 pads to clean a room. After use, the housekeeper easily removes the soiled pad by placing a foot on the pad edge and lifting the mop handle away. The soiled pad is set aside for laundering. Used pads are not returned to the cleaning solution, so the cleaning solution does not become contaminated or need replenishing. Soiled microfiber clothes are easily cleaned in a washing machine.

“It’s a mistake when building owners or facilities managers view commercial cleaning as a cost,” says Stephen Collins, founder and president of Stephco Cleaning & Restoration based in Holbrook, Mass. “Commercial cleaning is really an investment. Sometimes you need to explain to executives — especially those in charge of finances — that maintaining a clean environment can pay for itself many times over — often in unexpected ways.”

As you know, alcohol-based hand sanitizers play a key role in keeping us healthy – especially during the winter-germ season. In fact, practicing good hand hygiene – handwashing with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer when hands are not visibly soiled – is one of the easiest and most effective ways to stay healthy.  So, it is important for us to understand the facts about hand sanitizers.

Yet, there are many misconceptions about alcohol-based hand sanitizers, and we wanted to take this opportunity to set the record straight.

Water is an essential element in any laundry and the quality of water used in the laundry process can have a direct effect on the appearance and wear life of clothing and textiles.

Many industrial laundries are concerned about the hardness of the water used and because of this problem, more soap and synthetic detergents are required in hard-water laundry areas.

Water is an excellent solvent. As water moves through soil and rock, it dissolves very small amounts of the minerals it comes in contact with and holds them in solution.

The dominant causes of water hardness are calcium and magnesium salts, other dissolved metal salts, bicarbonates, silicates and sulfates.

Hardness in water increases the difficulty of soil and stain removal and can have an adverse effect on some of the chemicals used in the laundry process. It is very important that the laundry operator regularly monitor water hardness and that the operator makes decisions about changing the amount of chemicals required, installing a water softener or recharging an existing water softener.
